The best way to experience the city is on foot. It’s small and compact enough to be explored on foot, and you won’t miss any of its hidden corners or charming details.
But if walking isn’t your thing, don’t worry! Bern also has an excellent public transportation system consisting of trams and buses that cover all major areas in the city.
P.S. It’s free for tourists staying at registered hotels, so make sure to take advantage of that, because Switzerland could be expensive otherwise!
SBB TRAIN APP
If you are coming from other Swiss cities, make sure to download the Swiss train app, which provides real-time updates on the routes. (BTW, Google Maps works also fine for bus, tram, and train connections around the city).

A Perfect One Day in Bern Itinerary
Now that you’re familiar with the best ways to explore the city… We are ready to dive into the details of a one-day trip to Bern and discover the beauty within.
Morning

First thing off, if you don’t have breakfast included in your hotel or you’ve just arrived at Bern’s Main Station, make sure to kick off an unforgettable day in Bern with a delightful breakfast at Café Fleur (it’s just a 15-minute walk).
This cozy spot feels like a picturesque postcard, perfectly situated in a mix of excitement while still offering a sense of escape. It’s surrounded by concrete and palm trees, where one can enjoy everything from a rich cup of Swiss hot chocolate to their divine flaking croissants.
Once you’ve fueled up, it’s time to start your day and walk through the gorgeous Old town into the Marktgasse. This street is one of the most charming areas in Bern, with little shops and cafes tucked into 15th-century buildings.
As you make your way through the winding streets, don’t miss a visit to the Zytglogge, the iconic clock tower that’s like Bern’s majestic timekeeper. If you can, catch the hourly show—the animated figures that dance around the clock face never fail to amaze!
P.S. If you are interested, you can even take a guided tour inside the Zytglogge and learn more about it yourself!
It’s also worth popping into some of the small artisanal shops along Marktgasse to pick up some unique souvenirs or gifts for loved ones back home.
Local tip: If you’re looking to skip the tourist crowds and wanna learn more about the history of Bern, consider booking a two-hour historical walking tour. This experience offers an in-depth exploration of the captivating stories behind the city’s remarkable landmarks.
The next step is wandering down to the Bundeshaus (the Federal Palace) where you can catch a glimpse of Switzerland’s political heart. The guided tours here are worth the time, offering intriguing insights into the country’s governance and architecture.
Afternoon
For lunch, head over to Restaurant Rosengarten—the view of the city is postcard-perfect, and their rösti, a crispy Swiss potato dish, is a must-try!
The service is attentive, and you might even catch some local wildlife, as the gardens here are often visited by graceful swans.
After full-field your belly and your eyes, it’s time to stop at Rosengarten (which is literally only a foot away). This is more than just a beautiful garden; it’s a serene space filled with blooming roses and panoramic views of Bern’s Old Town that’ll take your breath away.
Local Tip: Take a moment to fully appreciate the beauty around you, especially in spring when everything comes to life.
After your delightful time at Rosengarten, why not take a stroll along the scenic Aare River? The iconic bridges that cross this charming waterway, such as the Nydeggasse and the Landschaftsbrücke, offer fantastic spots to take in Bern’s stunning skyline.
Each bridge presents a unique perspective of the city and makes for some memorable photos!
Afternoon (Continued)
From there, it’s time to make your way to Bear Park, a hidden gem just a short walk from the city center. Here you can enjoy watching these spiritual animals in a natural habitat setting.
It’s a lovely stroll, and the atmosphere is serene.
For museum lovers, Bern is home to over 40 museums to choose from, covering a wide array of topics from art and history to science and culture.
Some personal recommendations include the Einstein House, Paul Klee Museum, and the Naturhistorisches Museum.
Night
As the sun starts to set, treat yourself to dinner at Kronenhalle. As a touchstone of Bernese tradition, this restaurant offers a sophisticated yet warm atmosphere. Their wild boar dish is simply spectacular, bursting with flavor, and perfectly complemented by a local wine.
Whether you’re in the mood for hearty Swiss fare or something refined, this establishment has been a local favorite for a reason!
After dinner, if you’re looking for a unique night experience, I highly recommend joining a night walk through Bern’s atmospheric Old Town, where you can marvel at the illuminated architecture and maybe even join in a local storytelling tour—these can provide a fascinating glimpse into the spirit of the city after dark.
For those interested in nightlife, The Dolder Grand offers a trendy bar with an incredible view, perfect for unwinding with a cocktail or two.
Where to Stay in Bern?
After a full day of adventure, you’ll need a comfy place to rest.
I’ve always had the pleasure of staying overnight at some friend’s places, and if you’re considering doing the same, I highly suggest using Couchsurfing to connect with locals and make so new international friendships.
Alternatively, I can provide you with some accommodation recommendations based on the specific types of stays you are looking for.
For budget travelers, Bern Youth Hostel provides clean and simple accommodations at a great rate.
If you’re looking for something mid-range, Hotel Alpenblick has a lovely atmosphere and is within walking distance of the city center.
For a luxurious experience, Hotel Bellevue Palace cannot be missed; it’s the epitome of elegance and offers stunning views of the Aare River.
Language & Currency
As one of the four official languages in Switzerland, German is the primary language spoken in Bern. Although English is widely understood and spoken, I recommend having a few German phrases handy (or downloading a translation app on your smartphone) to make your experience more authentic.
Keep in mind that the currency used in the whole of Switzerland is the Swiss Franc (CHF) and not the Euros (EUR). Most places accept credit cards as well, but it’s always a good idea to have some cash on hand for smaller purchases or transactions in case of emergencies (you never know).
Final Thoughts: Is One Day in Bern Worth It?
Now that you have all the information you need, get ready to explore the beautiful city of Bern on one unforgettable day!
Believe me, 24 hours is more than enough time to absorb the magic of this charming city. BTW, you can always choose to extend your stay if you wish.
Once you’ve soaked in all that Bern has to offer, why not venture further into Switzerland? Consider heading to the breathtaking landscapes of Interlaken or the picturesque charm of Lucerne. Or, even meet me in the southern of Switzerland (Ticino which is not Italy, but still part of Switzerland)!
